Faithful In The Little Things

Faithful In The Little Things
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” — Luke 16:10

One of the strange disciplines of running a cafe is learning to take small things seriously. The four grams of espresso that went into the cup. The half-second delay in steaming the milk. The temperature of the water. The chip on the saucer.

Most of us, most of the time, would rather skip the small things. They feel like distractions from the “real” work. But Jesus tells us the opposite. The small things are the real work. Faithfulness in little matters is the practice ground for faithfulness in large.

I see this in our learners. The ones who succeed long-term are almost never the most naturally gifted. They are the ones who, on day twenty-three, still take the four grams seriously. Still wipe down the steam wand. Still greet the customer at the door. Their faithfulness in the boring details is what builds the character that handles, eventually, much larger trust.

This is also how God works in us. He does not usually start with the big things. He starts with how we treat our spouse before the coffee is ready. How we answer the email we’d rather ignore. The little things are the curriculum.

If you are waiting for a big assignment from God, look down. The little things in your hand are the assignment. Be faithful there.

Soli Deo Gloria — To God alone be the glory.
