Psalm 92:1–15

King James Version

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,” — Psalm 92:1–2

New American Standard Bible 1995

“It is good to give thanks to the LORD And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning And Your faithfulness by night,” — Psalm 92:1–2

English Standard Version

“It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night,” — Psalm 92:1–2

There was a season when I dreaded opening my eyes. As an addict, morning was a sentence, not a gift. Each sunrise brought another day of chasing, hiding and lying, and each night ended with the hollow promise that tomorrow would be different. Had anyone asked me to praise God in the morning, I would have laughed, or cried.

Life in Christ has not been calm water. In other seasons, my business looks like it is growing, yet as a social entrepreneur I still face wave after wave. A contract ends, as our HTX café’s did after three years. A Restarter we poured ourselves into walks out and never returns. Bills fall due before sales come in. Some weeks I feel the sand of my strength dragged out with every tide. The old Matthew would have complained. Honestly, some mornings he still tries.

Psalm 92 carries an unusual heading: “A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day.” It is the only psalm set apart for the day of rest, and its keynote is thanksgiving for the work of God’s hands, the creation He finished before He rested. Then comes a picture I love: the righteous flourishing like a palm tree. Palms on our coastline do not escape the storm. They bend low and stand again, because their roots run deep. And the psalm is clear whose strength this is: those who flourish confess that the LORD is upright and is their Rock.

That changed how I read my days. Morning praise does not deny the waves; it declares His steadfast love before I know what the day brings. Faithfulness at night is looking back to see that He carried me through. I learnt this slowly, through Teen Challenge under Pastor Paul Tan and Bible studies at Changi with men who have every reason to despair. Calamities are often hidden classrooms. In them I learn dependence, and through them God opens doors to show His love to others in the storm. My darkest chapters have become the very story He now uses behind our counters and in prison classrooms.

🌅 Morning · Reflect

What waves are crashing on your shore this morning? Is it a debt, a diagnosis, a relapse, or a child who will not speak to you?

When you woke today, what did you say to God first? Was it a complaint or a song?

🌊 Midday · Pause

Stop here for a moment. Name the wave. Then name one time God has already carried you through, and thank Him for it tonight.

🌴 Night · Hope

The God who held you then is your Rock now, and He has not finished with you. The psalm promises that even in old age, those planted in His house will still bear fruit.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for bringing me through both the joys and the trials of my life. When the waves come, root me deeper in You. Teach me to sing of Your steadfast love each morning and to trace Your faithfulness each night. Help me walk with You in my everyday tasks, and let my storms become places where others see Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Soli Deo Gloria

“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)
